FUN FACTS

The elixir in our collection comes from Baja Fairy Duster or Red Fairy Duster, a shrub native to the Sonoran Desert. It loves the full desert sun, is drought tolerant and evergreen in conditions over 25°F. Its flowers & pods provide food for hummingbirds, bees, butterflies, birds and even bats.

The bright red flowers resemble a mini feather-duster or soft sea urchin and they bloom almost year round, even through the winter! The petit leaves close up at night to conserve water and protect from predators. Its long seed pods look like snow peas and are explosive. When ripe, they pop open with such force, they can disperse the seeds up to 6 feet away!

In its physical form, Baja Fairy Duster has been used in many ways as a traditional remedy, treating cystitis, fevers, toothaches and more.

Its latin name, Calliandra (californica), means “beautiful stamen” ~ a reference to the dozens of stamen on the unique red flowers that bring color & life to its surrounding environment.
