Medicine Buddha with 108 Flowers

The Inspiration

1. A very special stupa in Kathmandu, Nepal: Swayambhu

Alison lived in Nepal for 6 years when she was in her 30’s.

Part of her daily practice was to circumambulate Swayambhu Stupa, which sits on a hill surrounded by a mandala of medicinal plants.

When we all visited Nepal in 2022, it is at the base of this stupa that she was inspired to paint a Medicine Buddha of her own.

1. Katie's flower medicine

In traditional thangka paintings, the Medicine Buddha is often depicted surrounded by Tibetan medicinal plants.

For Alison’s unique expression of the Medicine Buddha, she chose 108 of the beautiful flowers Katie has made into flower essences!

The Making of the Thangka

Before painting on the actual canvas, Alison did watercolor studies of all 108 of the flowers featured in the painting.

The entire painting took 1 year to complete.
