COLLECTION STORY
During our flower essence collection trip in Nepal, while in Kathmandu, we would get up early in the morning to do kora (circumambulation) around the base of the Swoyambhu Stupa. It is said that if you do 13 circumambulations, it dissolves negative karma of body, speech and mind. It takes about 45 minutes to walk one time around, so we got into the habit of doing one each morning.
At the base of the Stupa, on the south side, there’s a walkway with prayer wheels dedicated to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Next to this walkway, there are many Water Hyacinth flowers in bloom.
FUN FACTS
Water Hyacinth is known in Nepal as ‘Jalkumbhi’ (जल्कुम्भी). The flowers bloom throughout the year in tropical climates, yet typically live for only one day and are very delicate.
Hyacinth purifies the water in ponds; the roots naturally absorb pollutants, including toxic chemicals such as lead, mercury, strontium 90 and other organic compounds that are believed to be carcinogenic.
In ideal conditions, Water Hyacinth can double in population every 6-15 days. Because of its rapid growth, Water Hyacinth can be referred to as the most productive plant on the planet, yielding more than 200 tons of dry matter per hectare (2.7 acres) per year, despite being 90-95% water by weight when fresh!
Due to its invasive nature, Water Hyacinth is being studied as a source of fibers for weaving. In Indonesia, a home industry has been established producing items such as handbags, slippers, hats and vests from the stalks which connect the leaves to the stem.
