COLLECTION STORY
We found this flower on the pass between Idaho and Wyoming – in the middle of filming for a documentary about flower essences and a run-and-gun style vlog (FLOWER HUNTERS ~ watch season 1 here!).
I had been drawn to this flower for many years, and I’d only ever seen it way past its prime in northern Arizona. By divine timing, we found it in its full bloom state, buzzing with bumblebees, looking over the stunning Grand Tetons.
FUN FACTS
A member of the Gentian plant family, Monument Plant is known for its bitter medicinal compounds. The plant often lives as a rosette of leaves for 40-60 years before ever flowering! Then, it makes itself visible, sending a stalk up to 6 feet tall into the sky with hundreds of star shaped flowers.
Monument Plant typically blooms in synchrony, with a generation of plants blooming all at once after decades of quiet root-building. It’s monocarpic – meaning it blooms only once and then dies, giving the entirety of its energy and life to spread seeds for its future generations.
