Although native to North America, the Stream Orchid is not common in the state of South Dakota. It can only be found at a warm springs in a tiny little southwestern corner of the state, where we found it!
We went for a swim in the warm springs and I went off exploring areas where there were no swimmers. Sure enough, I found the orchids growing off of a mineral-rich cliff. As the first flower I’ve had to wade chest-deep through warm springs to find, this was a pretty exciting find! Taylor joked that it was something like out of a National Geographic documentary, as she was just behind me with the camera (and wide-eyed watching out for water snakes + poison ivy).
As I was making the flower essence, a massive crowd of cicadas began to sound, filling the air with vibration in a deafening way ~ listen to this audio clip we recorded while we were chest deep in the water standing before the orchid.
Native to North America, the Stream Orchid can be found from British Columbia down to Mexico growing next to river banks and hot springs. A crazy-looking orchid, its colors range from bright yellow to burgundy to lime green.
Ironically, in doing research about the flower, I found that another common name for it is ‘chatterbox’.
If you find yourself attracted to the Stream Orchid, there are two possible reasons for that:
First, you may have something in your heart that has gone unexpressed. This doesn't mean that you have to tell people your painful story, simply that there is energy stuck in your throat that you can get unstuck by singing, humming, groaning, shouting, chanting, etc.
The second reason you may be attracted to the Stream Orchid is if it’s time to explore the healing power of sound - particularly with your voice. You may be curious about the power of your voice through song, expression, words or chanting. Whether as a public speaker, a podcaster or a teacher, you may want to use your voice as a means to create a positive impact in the world.
We are at a time in our culture where sound healing is becoming more popular and we’ve not yet explored the healing power of the voice. For example, why do we moan and groan when we give birth or when we’re in physical pain? How is it that the songs of frogs bring the rain? Why is it that so many spiritual traditions have mantra as an integral practice? What is being activated in the body and the environment when we use our vocal chords as an instrument? These are all questions that can be more deeply understood through direct experience and exploration with this orchid elixir.
Stream Orchid cleanses our speech energies and activates our throat chakra. It helps us notice and purge certain speech patterns that are not beneficial and releases any stuck energy in the throat. It can even effortlessly release patterns of shyness, frustration, holding back, pain, suffering and even violation through the throat.
It helps us more deeply understand the healing qualities of sound, and makes us more aware of the effects of different sounds on ourselves, others and the environment. It enhances our ability to be better listeners as well as more aware of the effects of our vocal expression. It expands our potential as healers + change-makers by helping us explore the ability of sound to expand our auras. We also become more aware of the healing power of the sounds in our environment, such as birds, insects, frogs and cicadas.
