Thank you for the beautiful comments + questions on the last post! I’m really excited + it seems like a lot of you are getting intrigued as well.
I’ve been writing about methods to transform intense emotions … and how most of us have one or more self-limiting beliefs running in the background without even knowing it!
When these false beliefs play out into some situation in our life, it becomes very painful. My meditation teacher once said that when a thought that you have is super painful, it is usually because we are believing something that is not true.
1. Genetic.
My flower essence teacher (and other energy medicine/quantum physics folks would agree) would say that we carry the thought patterns in our DNA of up to six generations back in our family lineage.
You might think your thoughts are your own, but it turns out your grandmother + great, great grandfather had the same thoughts.
2. Upbringing.
When we’re young + impressionable, we learn from caregivers, friends + teachers (besides our family). Some of what we learn is really positive; some of what gets passed on to us are limiting beliefs.
3. Collective Consciousness.
Depending on what part of the world you live in, you are part of a unique collective consciousness. An entire group of people living in one area tend to think similarly due to culture as well as having similar causes + conditions for situations in their lives.
Even just people living in the United States have their own set of patterns. When I visit other countries, I find it so curious that different cultures each have their own different combination of emotional/thought patterns. You see it play out in everyday interactions.
For example, in the U.S. sarcasm is a common style of expressing humor. In Asia, sarcasm very rarely exists as a form of humor. I remember being in Taiwan with my close friend (who’s Taiwanese) + I cracked a sarcastic joke. She gave me a fierce look. And I realized that I must sound like a complete a**hole, in a culture where sarcasm doesn’t exist.
Sarcasm can often be a very subtle expression of being hard on oneself—for example, when you make fun of yourself. But in a different culture where everyone is ultra sincere with their words, it doesn’t land correctly, because they don’t have the same collective thought patterns.
Or another example: in the U.S. we value being polite over being truthful. I remember posting a profile picture of myself on Facebook—everyone was commenting on how nice the photo was. A Tibetan Buddhist nun from Nepal who had lived at my house for years (but who is now back in Nepal), commented on the photo: “You look fatter than before!”
I chuckled to myself, watching this cultural clash on Facebook. In Himalayan cultures, being truthful (+ accepting oneself as one is without shame) is valued over just simply being polite. And within the collective consciousness there, their feelings don’t get hurt by those kinds of comments, because they typically don’t have the same kinds of insecurities that Americans do.
So, in short, after doing one-on-one flower essence consultations with hundreds of clients for over a decade in the U.S., I’ve found that most people have one or several of the following most common self-limiting beliefs:
These beliefs are usually buried in the subconscious. Most people don’t even know they exist on some level. They may affect your everyday behavior, but they were instilled at such a young age that it’s like trying to see your own eyelashes.
These self-limiting beliefs can lead to occasional experiences of fear, self-limitation, attachment, feeling stuck, feeling like it’s impossible to accomplish what we want to, or that we don’t fit in.

In the beginning, when I was doing consultations full-time and I really felt that I was making a profound difference in people’s lives—I could really see clear transformations over time.
Then the business grew to a level that I could no longer provide consultations + even though customers write to us everyday with incredible stories of transformation, I still can’t help but wish I could do more.
Oftentimes I see people using flower remedies because they feel stressed. They take them when they feel stressed, but then when they feel better they stop taking them.
"Feeling better" is really only the first step in a beautiful self-discovery journey.
