Rose of Venezuela (Brownea grandiceps) grows in the understory of the Amazon Rainforest in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. Also known as Scarlet Flame Bean, this tree’s flower is considered to be one of the most visually stunning of all tree flowers, with a brightly-colored, crimson inflorescence (group or cluster of flowers arranged on a stem) that resembles a large tassel hanging down. The flower does not have a scent but secretes generous amounts of sweet nectar that attracts hummingbirds.
Aside from the breathtaking flower, the Rose of Venezuela tree has two additional magical qualities: first, its new shoots have a special camouflaging capability to ward off predators. They start out brown, with the appearance of being dead or wilted; as the shoot grows, over time they turn a beautiful green. Second, during the night, the leaves rise up to expose the flowers to the dew and the moonlight. In the morning, the leaves sink down again on top of the flowers to protect them from the sun.
Herbalists have used the dried flowers in infusions to treat dysentery and the bark to reduce bleeding + help clot the blood. Rose of Venezuela has also been used as a contraceptive by Indigenous tribes in the Amazon.
