In the beginning of 2016, I decided to take on the challenge of going one month with any sugar or dairy. So, basically, everything I love! Cheese, chocolate, cookies, ya know, everything that you don’t need but you really really want.

I went with an all or nothing mentality. I even cut out natural sweeteners like honey + maple syrup! I was completely determined to minimize my sweet tooth + work towards a healthier lifestyle.

Truthfully, I didn’t struggle too much. If anything, I just became irritated + angry at all of the food I had been eating with added sugar! EVERYTHING HAD SUGAR. The lunch meat I snacked on throughout the day, the almond milk I added to my plain (yet, still loaded with sugar) instant oats.

The American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than 25 grams of sugar a day for women + about 37 grams for men. Those grams should technically be saved for your daily serving of fruits + veggies (plus the occasional treat on days you just have to satisfy your cravings). Although, most people blow all the grams away within the first hour of waking up by adding creamers or syrups to coffee! A 12oz vanilla latte puts you at 27 grams of sugar! WHAT?!

After I started reading a little bit more into food labels, I really started researching what I was cutting from my diet.

Milk actually isn’t necessarily something that you’re supposed to continue consuming into adulthood. Here are a few reasons why:

  • Animal milk is LOADED with hormones so that they can produce milk year round. Those hormones counteract + overload our own bodies hormone production. This also increases acne + other skin issues.
  • It may be hard to digest due to most humans lacking the proper enzymes.
  • Has a lot of fat + causes excessive bloating.

Needless to say, neither of those were helping my health in any way. A year later, I have still completely kept dairy out of my diet… although I do rarely end up eating something with cheese in it. I do everything in my power to stay away from sugar. If I’m preparing my own food, I will use natural sweeteners like maple syrup or honey. I read every label before buying anything + understand the importance of moderation.

After cutting dairy + sugar out of my diet for a few months, I started noticing some really positive changes! I felt happier, had a more balanced energy level, rarely craved sweets + felt my body getting stronger + healthier!

If you aren’t ready to drop both dairy + sugar, I recommend to start by saying bye to the sugar, especially refined sugars! Your mind + body will be so thankful for that small but important lifestyle change! <3
